Agora

October 16

At this point I think we all have heard and seen many, Agora, Amenabar's new film: What if the largest budget in the history of Spanish cinema (€ 50 million, doubling Alatriste, which is the second) , that if after the cold reception in Cannes he had had to put a "snip" of 20 minutes, to leave in two hours and a few minutes ...

agora

So the other day I decided to see just at the end of the day, Amenábar, I think he won a presitigio, and above all a loyal following, which I am one, after his first two films and that is why now dedicated to making you crave stories, knowing that, for now, the public responds. In this case with astronomy, which is one of their own interests.

Agora is his foray into period filmmaking, a genre that requires a means for the end result is not a cutrez aesthetic concern.

The film notes that there are pasta, and lots and tucked in, but at least it is well used: the recreation of ancient Alexandria, in terms of sets, costumes and setting, in general, is very accomplished and the plans generated computer, but I think too much of them are abused, and even more planes zenith of the city, sometimes giving the impression of being in a computer game strategy (type Civilization), in a movie. I guess the virtual recreation will have taken much of the budget and had to be paid off within minutes on screen.

The film, with the exception of its protagonist, Rachel Weisz, has a completely unknown cast about the life of Hypatia, philosopher and astronomer S. IV in Alexandria the Great LIBRARY, as an excuse to develop the conflict that occurs in the time history (decline of the Roman Empire) to merge the ancient polytheistic religion of the Romans, with the burgeoning power of Christianity, and the presence of the Jews.

In a superficial criticism I suppose you will accuse Amenábar to create a critical history with Christianity, although personally, and while loading the inks with this group, I think it is a critique bigotry against anyone, that derived from the religion, whatever it may have degenerated into violence and war, in spite of that religion, in theory, should protect and defend the opposite of peace.

As opposed to these values of hatred and violence arising education, culture and study, as a way of understanding and discovering the truth, though ironically many of these scholars at any given time, and driven by hatred, also relying on the use of the sword.

All this with the central character in conflict with the reality that surrounds it, as the new situation, with a bishop fundamentalism, endangers its status, while he tries to prove his theories of planetary motion (a problem take centuries to resolve).

In the end, the director manages to weave mastery of historical drama, social conflict, the kind of astronomy, while leaving a message for all to ponder.

In a second reading, and this I borrow from a friend, also a look at how insignificant we are in the cosmos, which would also explain both the transition plan: stars, earth, city, individuals.

I also think it is a film that creates a division of opinion in my room was from a round of applause, which already is rare in a room, even if not massive, with comments like "Wow more bad movie."

I think neither one thing nor the other. You can not expect another "thesis" but not bad. It is very elaborate, and a complex story that gets along well.

Of course, if they had not gotten the "snip" of the twenty minutes probably change my opinion, it is on the edge of being heavier.

Well I think the film is a bit slow and there is too much history concentrated in a short film. Should have focused on the struggle of religion and astronomy. For my taste, focusing on astronomy would have been more interesting but I doubt there is much information at the time.
The struggle of religions, and we, the Christians (in this case, extends to all fanaticism) destroy everything that is not your thing. destroy and annihilate everything and as Bea said in the film during the destruction of the Library: "What a shame to see that, how much knowledge is lost throughout history." And I would add, hopefully the peaceful coexistence of cultures was, how much we would learn all!

IN my opinion, the film deserves a 7 and being generous.

Without going any further this weekend and I have seen newspaper articles attacking what Amenábar said charge against Christianity, a kind of collusion or conspiracy, orchestrated from high above, in order to discuss this and not the issues of concern ...
Let an argument almost as complicated as that of the same movie.
Even so, it seems it has taken any other license that quite generous, to be more gimmicky: the great destruction of the library was a few centuries ago, Christians seem to destroy much less than it seems (at least in material), the main character did not die young and pretty, but when it was quite old ...

That said ... it is not realistic, so I quite like.
