Dracula, the undead

November 19

Dracula, the undead, is the sequel to "official" of the famous novel, Dracula (Bram Stoker), probably the most famous horror title of all time, which gave rise to the myth of vampires in general, and Count Dracula in particular.

And I say sequel "official", because apart from having the pleasure of the most recognized authorities, there is even a society dedicated to the famous Count with college students, is co-authored a descendant (great grandson of Bram Stoker's nephew), Drake Stoker. The other author is Ian Holt, whose career has been focused on the Hollywood industry.

The authors have dived between Stoker files to follow several storylines and characters that Stoker used had expected when he wrote the novel, and then not used. Even the title is one of those who were considered for the original novel

Obviously, the style has been updated since the original novel is set, and published at the end of the Victorian Era, particularly in 1897. Fruit of the time is written in a style different from today, is an epistolary novel-like narrative technique that uses the letters that go between the characters and the personal journal entries each.

Anyway, if you have not read the novel, the adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola, besides being a great movie is very faithful. Yes, it is recommended, or have read the book or seen the movie to read the sequel, since it refers to time.

The story is set in London in 1911. It has been 25 years since the Seward, Quincey Morris, Arthur Holmwood, Jonathan Harker and Van Helsing to travel to Transylvania to stop Count and Mina free. Actually, this is an inaccuracy on the dates of the first novel, but it is a license that has taken the authors, because it suited them more time to fit in any storyline.

This adventure sequelae, more mental than physical, in most of them, who can not get over it (apart from Morris, who dies in the first novel). The problems of age, and are 50 years and Van Helsing over 70, join others such as addiction (morphine, alcohol), crazy for love and marriage breakdown not forgotten.

The one for which there seems to be past time is mine, which continues to maintain a youthful appearance, despite having 50 to 25 year old son. This child has gone rebel and bohemian and is in Paris, studying theory, but with the desire to be an actor and meet one of the largest in Europe: Basarab, mysterious Romanian player.

The disgrace begins to loom over the group, while in London discovers Quincey begins to represent a work, Dracula, which are their parents as well as real characters.

From here I will not tell more than generalities about the plot, but as you have been deducted, within the novel is ongoing homage to the original, including the presence of Bram Stoker, as another character, oddly self-conscious because he believes it is overshadowed by Oscar Wilde and will never be able to match his fame.

Also, to give it a more film, also appear mythical characters of the time as "Jack the Ripper" (Van Helsing is suspected of being the notorious murderer).

But the surprises do not end there, as the authors wanted to give a different image to the Count, was it really a monster so terrible? o Only one person in love who want to spend eternity with his beloved?

This line of suspense will remain open during most of the novel and the role of a mysterious female character of the Countess Erzsebet Bathory, who will play a key role in the novel.

The end result, though it may displease purists Dracula is a different, and a pretty decent novel. I guess not easy to please everyone, it is a very mystified, and so many prejudices (according to Wiki there are about 1,000 novels who drink of the myth of Count Dracula), so there is variety.

The structure is relatively short chapters which are developed on two or three different frames open at the same time, more in line with current trends.

I, personally, I found entertaining, although sometimes a bit heavy, though not too long and I think the plot of the Inspector Cotford and Jack the Ripper is a little embedded "with shoehorn" and could be safely removed .

So if you like horror stories, and you are attracted to the myth of Count Dracula is likely to enjoy this novel.

Excuse me, but at all. The adaptation of Coppola's totally free. It not only eliminates some characters and changes the personality of another (as Lucy turned inside out), also invented entirely from motives of Dracula and then pulled off the love story with Mina. Respected even finish. If one really wants to know the novel, it is best to resort to typical read it.

Sorry, wanted to quote this paragraph but apparently not out: "However, if you have not read the novel, the adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola, besides being a great movie is very faithful."

Very few exceptions it is always best to read the novel to see the film, for many reasons, and is something we often defend here.
In this case, it was a recommendation to contextualize the sequel.
However, the film does not strike me as an aberration of adaptation, though, I guess to make it more commercial, altered parts of the novel.
About the story with Mina, I do not remember well, for over ten years ago I read the novel, but in any case, is one of the elements that are present in the sequel
