Avatar (3D): The future has arrived

Jan 10

Avatar was one of those films that at first I really wanted to see, but which had some fear of the result.

And, take months after hearing about it, and that would mean a leap in cinema-like sound, color or Cinemascope, I had my doubts whether I would end up disappointing, having created such expectations high.

So I chose a room where projected in 3D, as has been conceived and prepared to live the revolution. The result, though a bit odd, was quite satisfactory.

I guess we all have heard about, and under-collection of figures, many have seen the film, which features a return to movies after 12 years, James "I'm the King of the World" Cameron, after the overwhelming success Titanic got that from my point of view would be a great disaster movie, if you take off an hour-pasteleo DiCaprio Winslet.

Cameron, who loves to discover and exploit new teconologías for film, as it did in the early 90's with the "morphing" in Abyss-technical marvel to the public in Terminator II, and since then has been used to satiety in both film and advertising, since a project was in the drawer, while engaged in developing new techniques and tools for underwater filming at great depth, or 3D system, which has been used in this film.

One such project was Avatar, but lacked technology to recreate the world of Pandora had in mind. Until one day apparently stood amazed at the progress of the children of Peter Jackson, another visionary, Weta Digital to give life to Gollum.

From then decided to dig up the script and get going, with the addition of wanting to bring the film to the next level-so messiah-savior with 3D projection, outside the field of animation, the most used so far.

The result will taste more or less, but certainly a step forward, I think we will remember for many years, and for many will bring people to theaters.

Like any first experience is a bit strange: first to see the whole room with the glasses creates a feeling a bit disconcerting, then cost something to suit the 3D image, which gives a sense of unreality, mainly in computer-generated characters do not and finally I lost some color, due to filter glasses. If you see the movie in 3D, try several times to take away the glasses and Compare. The movie looks better than expected: more color, and appearing only blur (double look, I guess it is what creates the 3D effect) objects located deeper.

And after this intro, a bit long, but the occasion merits, let's talk about the movie itself.

In case you have not heard about this argument is summarized as follows: In the not too distant future-year 2130, approx-humans have colonized the planet Pandora, for valuable mineral resources. On this planet, a true paradise, inhabited by Navis, blue creatures about three meters and humanoid forms. To complement the exploitation of the planet scientists create replicas of the Navis Avatars remote control as a sort of virtual reality in humans, which are integrated at the neural level with these Avatars.

One of the humans is a exmarine, who has been paraplegic, and thus to enter the Avatar again to move, and somewhat accidental circumstances will be integrated into this community.

While coexistence between humans and the Navi will suffer stress when they discover a major ore deposit near the town of Navis.

The film, in addition to directing, he has also written Cameron himself, and that is, in my opinion, the main fault.

Lack history, because the end has come the typical story of confrontation between a superior civilization, invasive, against indigenous technologically underdeveloped, but who wants to defend its territory and customs, we have seen so often repeated: Seventh Cavalry vs. Indians; Spanish vs. Aztecs; Boers vs Zulus ...

In addition, borrows from others, dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, with its own, the articulated armor of aliens, a couple of ships that appear tribute to 2001 with what eventually has become a hodgepodge, we do not know very well if is critical of capitalism, militarism, environmental protection, resulting in a kind of pastiche, full of topics and, in my opinion, weighing down the wonderful visual spectacle that is the film.

Because it is visually overwhelming, not only for the 3D effect, which in itself is amazing and more real than you might expect. The world of Pandora is a stretch of the imagination, wonderful trees and floating mountains, and a little less wildlife, I have said reminds me too much Jurassic Park.

The scenes of the unfolding navis by trees and ravines are very dynamic, supported by the 3D effect, and the battles. The two hours lasting cumpliditas the film is not just getting too long, and in another movie with a script so weak be noticed more.

Furthermore, it should give Cameron the merit of not incurring too easy to abuse the trick of "throwing" objects to the public to be more gimmicky.

In the end it gives you the impression of having seen something completely different, you can taste more or less, but I think it will take to see something quite similar. I have doubts about whether the 3D effect can be exploited much more of what Cameron has done, and here I think so we'll see big surprises in a few years, when managers are familiar with this technique. However surprising that we feel many camera movements or situations, it is still a film pioneer, and therefore experimental.

So if you like movies as entertainment is an essential movie to watch on big screen, and I think the Euro and a half, or two, which is worth more to see it in 3D worth it. I will not let you indifferent.

Score: 8 (10 for the change that is, 10 aesthetics and that is visually overwhelming, 4 per script story and characters)
