The Writer: Polanski takes good wicker weaving a good Thriller

June 18

A few days ago we discussed the original novel, which inspired the always controversial Polanski in his latest film.

As you know of our fondness for contrasting results on the screen of some novels the other day I went to see the movie, in a room full enough to be a movie poster that takes in about three months to check that a director had recognized with a very usable text, and if it was true that he had made one of his best films.

The argument is, in summary, if not read the post the following: a professional writer "black", specializing in biography, is hired to work with a former British prime minister in his memoirs, after the -disappearance in mysterious circumstances, the charge of the process before. Just then, the politician is alleged to have worked, or rather allowed, detention and torture of several "suspected" Islamic terrorists, which can take before the International Criminal Court and will affect the course of history.

The result on screen is that it is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel, except in its last five minutes in which attempts to give a twist to an end, which obviously we will not disclose, and which, from my point of view I did not need the latest twist conspiracy.

So, in general, makes use of a starting material more than acceptable to create a good movie that keeps tension on the motivations of the president, and yes it was a good Prime Minister, although I guess it depends a review some position in the current dilemma: They justify unusual situations to actions outside the rules? As this would be subject to a post-opinion of which we did not take long, then leave it and focus on the film.

It's a film that stands completely on the actors, mainly in four, and in the script, which take precedence over anything else.

The protagonist in theory is the writer, played by Ewan McGregor, which is fine, between the skepticism that is supposed to a "black", not to empathize too much with his client, and causes the impression that the Prime Minister with her magnetic personality, which does not prevent you try to delve into the hidden motives of this, and everything to do with the disappearance of his predecessor. It is ten years younger than his character in the novel, but this does not affect development.

However, Pierce Brosnam, ends up being much more interesting as a character, with all its shades, which put us in doubt, which is what it is-whether it is a responsible politician, concerned with issues of national security or a war criminal, that is what is charged by a member of his cabinet. Interesting is the reflection on the sidelines, pointing more to a personal vendetta, that an attempt to "justice" and as certain ideas, noble in principle, end up prostituting themselves by personal interests. In that sense, put a note to make the character believable. Let's say that is one of those actors who can imagine a Prime Minister.

It is in the women's side where I see the biggest mistake in the casting, particularly in the assistant to the president, who is played by Kim Cattrall, who is known for her role as Samantha in Sex and the City. Her image of the novel, is of someone much younger and Cattrall, as much as you insist, I see a little pasadita to go from "Femme Fatale", but when a character in contrast to the wife of the first minister, Olivia Williams plays here.

In fact, there should be an age difference in a woman Prime Minister is more than ten years older, when in reality is the opposite Kim Cattrall is 11-years older than his "rival" - so the difference of age between them, which should be apparent not for nothing. In fact, the wife of Prime Minister gives a freshness and spontaneity that even-and this is a subjective, personal opinion and make it look more attractive, compared to the artificiality of the assistant. In that respect, despite all the "devours men" both the actress, as the paper, I prefer the natural appeal against the artificial.

Of the other comment that photography is cold, with a predominance of gray tones the novel, set in the winter, set in the island of Martha's Vineyard, one of the most elite to the resort on the East Coast-that is well set, although the film was shot there, remember that Polanski weighs on an arrest warrant in the U.S. that prevents you from entering the country. That must be why it has taken a whole passage of the novel set in New York (not to be so simple to recreate, in a film that should not be a big budget). Another aspect of changing the face of novel, although in this case is by Paxton should be released, is the presence of a BMW, which has its "minutes of glory."

In short, is a thriller that keeps the tension during the more than two hours of film, not too long ago, and that can give us for the odd afterthought on the intricacies of power, and decisions to be taken certain people. In that respect, I prefer making, though difficult to passivity "politically correct"
